چکیده

Bone marrow biopsy showed infiltration by numerous histiocytes. Some of the histiocytes contained vacuolated cytoplasm whilst others contained granules that stained deep blue with the May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain (Figure 2). This histological pattern was indicative of Niemann-Pick disease. Confirmation of this diagnosis was obtained by lysosomal enzyme assay that showed undetectable sphingomyelinase activity. Aberrant Promoter Methylation Profile of Niemann-Pick Type C1 Gene in Cardiovascular Disease

Background: The protein of Niemann-pick type C1 (NPC1) gene promotes the egress of cholesterol from late endosomes and lysosomes to other cellular compartments and contributes to a process known as reverse cholesterol transport. This study aimed to examine whether promoter methylation of NPC1 is associated with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Fifty CVD patients and 50 healthy sub...

Niemann-Pick disease type B: HRCT assessment of pulmonary involvement

OBJECTIVE To analyze HRCT findings in patients with Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) type B, in order to determine the frequency of HRCT patterns and their distribution in the lung parenchyma, as well as the most common clinical characteristics. METHODS We studied 13 patients (3 males and 10 females) aged 5 to 56 years. HRCT images were independently evaluated by two observers, and disagreements we...

Pulmonary Abnormalities in Animal Models Due to Niemann-Pick Type C1 (NPC1) or C2 (NPC2) Disease

Niemann-Pick C (NPC) disease is due to loss of NPC1 or NPC2 protein function that is required for unesterified cholesterol transport from the endosomal/lysosomal compartment. Though lung involvement is a recognized characteristic of Niemann-Pick type C disease, the pathological features are not well understood. We investigated components of the surfactant system in both NPC1 mutant mice and fel...

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and Niemann Pick disease type B: An unexpected combination

BACKGROUND Pulmonary involvement in Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) is a common finding, especially in type B. It usually manifests with symptoms of restrictive lung disease appearing in adulthood but showing gradual deterioration over time. Treatment options have been dramatically limited, with whole lung lavage offering only temporary improvement. Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) has been prev...
